To determine comparable coverage, a student must complete a waiver application by accessing the online waiver site administered by Aetna Student Health at www.uvastudentinsurance.com and following the instructions under the tab labeled “Enroll/Waive."
Before entering the online waiver site, a student should have all of the following available:
- Current health insurance plan ID card.
- Current health insurance carrier’s brochure or plan description.
- University ID number (UID). A student who does not know their UID can go to www.virginia.edu/sis and click on "University ID Lookup" in the Help section.
Although the online waiver site is administered by Aetna Student Health, it has been pre-programmed to evaluate a student’s waiver application pursuant to the specific coverage criteria set by UVA. Aetna Student Health has no discretion in denying a waiver application.
Students must file a waiver application at the online waiver site on or before August 31, 2018. This deadline will be strictly enforced. No waiver applications will be processed after August 31, 2018. Students not meeting the waiver requirement by August 31, 2018, will be expected to pay the Aetna Student Health Insurance plan premium charge on their SIS accounts. See Denied Waivers or Failure to Waive. Waivers are submitted once at the beginning of each academic year.
Dependents of enrolled students are not subject to the hard waiver program. UVA strongly encourages dependents to maintain adequate health coverage throughout their stay in Charlottesville. As a reminder, dependents with the J-2 visa status are required by law to maintain health insurance at proscribed minimum levels throughout their stay or risk the loss of legal status.
After Submitting a Waiver Application
Review of waivers is completed in 7-10 business days. If more than 10 business days have passed since your application, the status of a waiver application can be confirmed by calling Aetna customer service at 1-800-466-3027. If a student's waiver application is approved, they will receive an email stating that it has been approved. A denial by the pre-programmed online waiver site is not the final decision. All denied waivers are subsequently reviewed by University personnel and an email will be sent from UVA confirming the final determination. See Denied Waivers or Failure to Waive.
