Margaret Phillips joined the Department of Student Health and Wellness in August 2022 and serves as the Director of Administration. As a member of the department’s leadership team, she oversees the coordination, direction, and policy development in a range of functional areas including finance and budgeting, human resources, insurance and billing, facilities, information technology, medical records, and general business operations.

Before returning to UVA, Margaret spent 10 years as the Associate Director for Business Operations in the Dean’s Office of the School of Medicine at Virginia Commonwealth University. In that capacity, she was responsible for the oversight and management of financial and business operations for multiple research centers and institutes which included strategic planning, budget development, financial management, human resources, and sponsored research administration. Margaret also developed and managed the clinical trial finance team out of the Dean’s Office which centrally managed post-award activities for all clinical trials in the School of Medicine. She served on the Institutional Review Board (IRB) and the Committee on the Administration of Research out of the Office of the Vice President for Research and Innovation.

Prior to joining VCU, Margaret worked for over six years at the Beirne B. Carter Center for Immunology Research in the School of Medicine at UVA. Her early career was spent in various financial positions within large global consumer product manufacturers.

Margaret earned her undergraduate degree in Finance from Radford University and her Masters in Business Administration from Averett University. She also obtained research certifications including Certified Research Administrator (CRA) and Certified Clinical Research Professional (CCRP).
