CAPS Internship: Commitments & Benefits

Internship Dates:  August 4, 2024 - August 3, 2025

Stipend:  $39,375

Benefits: Interns receive the benefits package as listed in the Financial and Other Benefit Support for Upcoming Training Year table and is further described below:

  • Leave Days:  Interns receive 22 annual leave days with approval of the Training Director, in addition to approximately 11 Student Health and Wellness holidays and five professional days. CAPS staff and interns are asked to not take more than seven scheduled leave days and five scheduled professional days when the academic semester is in session, although flexibility is offered when possible. We highly recommend that interns set aside approximately ten days of leave for the final two weeks of internship. This assists with a smoother transition to their subsequent position.

  • Health Insurance:  Individual health insurance premiums are paid by Student Health and Wellness. Incoming interns will have the opportunity to complete enrollment for health insurance during your first few days of orientation. For interns interested in family, spouse or domestic partner coverage, it is available at additional cost to the intern.

  • Malpractice Insurance:  Provided.

  • Administrative and Technical Support:  There are three administrative personnel who support the interns and staff, including an office manager. Administrative support staff assist with clerical responsibilities, phone contacts and logistics as needed. They also assist with intern application and interview processes.  Administrative support personnel are trained and highly skilled regarding our electronic medical record and scheduling systems.  Additionally, Student Health has three dedicated information technology staff members who reside in-house. They provide orientation to interns for electronic medical record and scheduling, and are available for all computer/software questions and difficulties.

  • Professional Development Grant:  Interns may utilize up to $300 for the purpose of attending conferences, workshops, and other professional activities, with approval of the Training Director. They also receive approved days off for professional development activities.

  • Parking:  Interns will be eligible to purchase a parking permit. You will be provided an opportunity to purchase a parking permit soon after arrival, the cost of which is approximately $360 at the outset of the year. Many interns find housing near enough to CAPS that parking is less necessary. More information is available at Parking and Transportation.

  • Athletic Facilities:  Interns are eligible to purchase a recreation membership at an annual rate of $350.  See Intramural-Recreational Sports for more about the facilities.

  • Drug Screening & Background Check:  The University of Virginia has a vital interest in providing a safe environment for its students, patients, visitors, and employees. Pursuant to Federal and State law, the University conducts pre-placement drug screening of applicants selected to fill designated high-risk/safety-sensitive positions, including doctoral interns at U.Va.’s Student Health, CAPS Department. Internship positions further require a fingerprint-based criminal history check. Prior to starting the internship, interns will be guided as to how to fill these requirements at UVA at no cost.
